Effectiveness of passive physical modalities for shoulder pain: systematic review by the Ontario protocol for traffic injury management collaboration.

Phys Ther. 2015 Mar;95(3):306-18.

This systematic review involving 11 randomized controlled trials investigated the efficacy of passive physical modalities for the treatment of soft tissue injuries of the shoulder in adults, with the purpose of determining the impacts of these interventions on functional recovery, quality of life, pain, and complications. The results of this study indicated the ineffectiveness of different passive physical modalities for various soft tissue injuries. However, low-level laser therapy demonstrated short-term effectiveness for subacromial impingement syndrome, and extracorporeal shock-wave therapy was found to be effective for persistent calcific tendinitis.
