Effectiveness of Kinesio taping and conventional physical therapy in the management of knee osteoarthritis: a randomized clinical trial.
Ir J Med Sci . 2023 Oct;192(5):2223-2233.Forty male patients with knee osteoarthritis were randomized to receive Kinesio taping plus conventional physical therapy (n=20) or conventional physical therapy alone (n=20) for a period of six weeks. Outcomes of interest included pain intensity measured by the Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), knee range of motion (ROM), Western Ontario and McMaster Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores, and the Time Up and Go test (TUG). Outcomes were assessed at baseline, three, and six weeks. Overall, the results of the study revealed that both groups showed improvement in pain and knee flexion, but improvements in WOMAC and TUG test scores were observed only in the KT plus CPT group. The combination of Kinesio taping and conventional physical therapy was found to be more effective than conventional physical therapy alone in reducing pain, enhancing range of motion, and improving physical functioning in patients with knee OA.
