Sixty-six patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) undergoing a posterior spinal fusion were randomized to receive bone resection during the operation using an ultrasonic bone scalpel (n=33) or a standard osteotomy (n=33). The primary outcome of interest was the estimated blood loss per level. Secondary outcomes of interest included the incidence of complications, blood transfusion rate, and operative time. Results revealed no significant difference between the two groups in all outcomes (p>0.05 for all).
