What is the benefit of tranexamic acid vs reinfusion drains in total joint arthroplasty?
J Arthroplasty. 2016 Jan;31(1):76-80234 patients scheduled for total joint arthroplasty were randomized to undergo the procedure using tranexamic acid (TXA) administration, a retransfusion drain, or a standard Hemovac drain. The purpose the study was to compare transfusion incidence and haemoglobin drop following surgery. No significant difference in transfusion rate was observed between the three groups. Haemoglobin drop was significantly lower in the TXA group compared to both the standard drain group and retransfusion group.
