Effect of the new non-inflatable laryngeal mask GMA-Tulip on airway management for lateral total hip arthroplasty in geriatric patients: a randomized controlled trial.

Seventy geriatric patients (ASA II-III) scheduled for elective lateral total hip arthroplasty under general anesthesia were randomized to receive either the new non-inflatable laryngeal mask GMA-Tulip (n=35) or the LMA Supreme (n=35). The primary outcome of interest was the oropharyngeal leak pressure (OLP). Secondary outcomes included peak airway pressure (PAP), insertion time, ease of insertion, number of attempts, glottic view grading, and perioperative complications (sore throat, blood staining, etc.). Outcomes were assessed at multiple time points during the procedure. Overall, the results of the study revealed that the GMA-Tulip had a higher OLP and lower PAP at all measured time points compared with the LMA Supreme. The GMA-Tulip also showed shorter insertion time and less postoperative sore throat at one hour. These findings suggest that the GMA-Tulip may provide superior airway sealing and faster placement than the LMA Supreme in this clinical context.
