Effect of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation on Patients With Chronic Ankle Instability .
Effect of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation on patients with chronic ankle instability: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
PLoS One. 2025 Jan 9;20(1):e0311355.Twelve studies including 405 patients with chronic ankle instability were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) to various control interventions. Pooled outcomes of interest included balance (Y Balance Test and Star Excursion Balance Test), muscle strength, pain (VAS), ankle instability questionnaires, joint position sense, and range of motion. PNF significantly improved balance, muscle strength, and pain, with superior outcomes in ankle instability scores. Improvements in joint position sense and dorsiflexion range of motion were observed but not statistically superior to controls. These findings suggest that PNF is effective in improving key functional outcomes in CAI rehabilitation, supporting its clinical use.
