Fifty three articles, investigating 544,733 patients, were systematically reviewed to determine the predictive effects of preoperative characteristics on mortality after hip fracture. Data from 26 included studies was pooled to investigate the role of 13 preoperative factors. The evidence presented in this paper reported that: male gender, age over 85 years, care institution residential setting, intra-capsular fracture type, high ASA grade, high Charlson comorbidity index, abnormal ECG, presence of cognitive impairment, BMI over 30 kg/m2, and pre-fracture mobility were linked to statistically significant risk of mortality between 6 to 12 months after hip fracture.
