Effect of Prehabilitation Before Total Knee Replacement for Knee Osteoarthritis on Functional Outcomes: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Two hundred sixty-two patients with knee osteoarthritis scheduled for TKR were randomized to receive either a multidisciplinary prehabilitation program (n=131) or usual care (n=131). The primary outcome was the proportion achieving functional independence a mean of 4 days after surgery. Secondary outcomes included activity limitations at 6 months (WOMAC function subscale AUC), pain intensity, quality of life, physical activity, and cost-effectiveness. Overall, the results of the study revealed no significant differences in short-term functional independence or in midterm activity limitations between groups. The findings suggest that prehabilitation, as delivered in this study, does not provide functional benefits before TKR.
