The effect of platelet-rich plasma on clinical outcomes within two years after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

J Orthop Surg Res. 2025 01-Nov:. 10.1186/s13018-025-06308-8Study Summary
Twelve randomized controlled trials including 599 patients undergoing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing platelet-rich plasma (PRP) versus no PRP or control treatments. Pooled outcomes of interest included pain (VAS), knee function (International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC), Lysholm, Tegner), and joint stability (KT-1000). The pooled analysis demonstrated that PRP significantly improved pain at 6 months and enhanced knee stability, but no significant improvements were observed in functional outcomes or long-term pain relief. Overall, these findings suggest that PRP may provide short-term benefits in pain reduction and stability after ACL reconstruction, but lacks sustained functional or long-term clinical benefit.
