Effect of perioperative music on delirium after hip fracture operations (MCHOPIN): a multicentre randomised clinical trial in Dutch hospitals.

449 patients aged 65 years or older with proximal femur fracture requiring surgical treatment were included in this two-arm parallel multicenter trial in which patients were randomized to either receive standard care alone (n=223) or combined with music during the perioperative period (n=226). The primary outcome of interest was the incidence of delirium over 7 days post op. The secondary outcomes of interest were the Delirium Observational Score, anxiety, pain and incidence of postoperative complications. The results of the study revealed that the in patients aged 80 years or older, the music group showed significantly lower incidence of perioperative delirium and a significantly lower incidence of post operative complications.
