The effect of milrinone on induced hypotension in elderly patients during spinal surgery: a randomized controlled trial

40 patients (60 to 70 years old) scheduled for lumbar fusion surgery were randomly allocated to two groups; one group received milrinone and the other was a control group. This study aimed to determine the effect of milrinone on induced hypotension during spinal surgery in elderly patients by measuring intraoperative blood loss and visibility of the surgical field. During infusion of the study drug, patients that received milrinone maintained their systolic and mean blood pressures within adequate limits of induced hypotension. Blood loss was reduced in the milrinone group and surgeons reported an improved grading of the surgical fields compared to the control group. No complications were reported in all the patients that participated in the study.
