220 patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty with patellar resurfacing for knee osteoarthritis were randomized to receive either lateral retinacular release (LRR; n=110) or no release (n=110). Outcomes of interest included Pressure Pain Threshold (PPT), Patellofemoral Feller Score (PFS), pain at rest, walking and on stairs on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Knee Society Score (KSS), patellar height, and patellar tilt, measured 1-year post-operation. LRR may be able to correct patellar tilt but all other outcomes were similar between the two groups.
