Does the intramedullary femoral canal plug reduce blood loss during total knee arthroplasty?

Five studies containing a total of 717 patients were included in this meta-analysis comparing femoral canal bone plugging (n=361) and no plugging of the femoral intramedullary canal (n=356). The pooled outcomes of interest included hemoglobin reduction, drained blood volume, and the need for blood transfusion. Studies found that patients who received femoral canal bone plugging had a significantly lower pooled hemoglobin reduction and a lower risk of blood transfusion compared to unplugged patients. No differences in pooled drained blood volume at 24 hours post-operation or in total were observed.
