Effects of carbazochrome sodium sulfonate combined with tranexamic acid on hemostasis and inflammation during perioperative period of total hip arthroplasty: A randomized controlled trial

The results of this study suggest that a combination of carbazochrome sodium sulfonate and tranexamic acid significantly reduces blood loss, inflammation and hip pain vs. tranexamic acid alone in patients undergoing unilateral total hip arthroplasty. This study was limited by the exclusion of patients at high risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and the short follow up time.

One hundred and fifty patients undergoing a total hip arthroplasty were randomized to receive carbazochrome sodium sulfate plus tranexamic acid (n=50), tranexamic acid only (n=50) or placebo (n=50). The primary outcome of interest was total blood loss. Secondary outcomes of interest included hemoglobin levels, coagulation and inflammatory markers, pain on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS), length of stay, and adverse events. Results revealed significantly lower blood loss, lower inflammatory marker levels, and less pain in the carbazochrome sodium sulfate group vs. both comaparator groups.
