Appropriateness of Twenty-four-Hour Antibiotic Prophylaxis After Spinal Surgery in Which a Drain Is Utilized: A Prospective Randomized Study
J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2015 Jun 17;97(12):979-86314 patients who underwent multilevel thoracolumbar spinal surgery followed by the use of a postoperative drain were randomized to either receive antibiotic prophylaxis for 24 hours, or for the entire duration the drain was in place. The purpose of the study was to compare infection rates between these groups within 1 year of surgery. Results indicated that infection rates were similar between groups. No increased risk of infection was detected when comparing revision cases with primary cases.
