Dual mobility versus standard cups in total hip replacement for displaced femoral neck fractures (Duality): an international, multicentre, randomised, controlled, superiority trial

1,600 elderly patients with displaced femoral neck fractures were randomized to receive either a dual mobility total hip replacement or a standard cup total hip replacement. The primary outcome of interest was dislocation of the index replacement. Secondary outcomes of interest included death, re-operation, infection, quality of life, and any other complications. Assessments were performed up to 1 year post-operation. Results revealed significantly lower rates of dislocation (1.3% vs. 4.2%, p<0.0001), surgical complications (3.0% vs. 6.1%, p=0.001) and dislocation or mortality (6.2% vs. 8.8%, p=0.026) in the dual mobility group, indicating its superiority over standard total hip replacement in this population.
