Drug tourism or spiritual healing? Ayahuasca seekers in Amazonia

Most people wishing to attend ayahuasca retreats do so for the purposes of spiritual enlightenment and/or healing, with few partaking in drug tourism. This study is limited by a small sample size and only interviewing participants of a single retreat, larger studies across further areas of the Amazon and different retreats is needed to validate these findings.

This cross-sectional interview of 16 ayahuasca retreat participants from the North American and Europe looked to determine the motivation of Westerners travelling to the Amazon to use ayahuasca. The interviews looked to determine if the motivation behind attending the retreat for drug-seeking or spiritual healing purposes. The study found that the motivations of the Western attendees were primarily based on issues of spiritual relations and development, as well as the potential for emotional healing and obtaining personal direction in life. Only one patient explicitly referred to withing to participate in drug tourism.
