Displaced proximal humeral fractures: operative versus non-operative treatment-a 2-year extension of a randomized controlled trial

50 patients over sixty years of age with severe displaced unstable three- or four-part proximal humeral fracture were randomized to undergo open reduction and internal fixation using an angular stable implant, or conservative treatment using a sling bandage. The aim of this study was to compare functional outcome and health-related quality of life between treatment modalities at two year follow-up. Results revealed that mean Constant score difference, 15D health-related quality of life, and ASES self-assessment form did not differ significantly between treatment groups.
