Is Local Infiltration Analgesia Superior to Peripheral Nerve Blockade for Pain Management After THA: A Network Meta-analysis
Clin Orthop Relat Res. 2016 Feb;474(2):495-51635 randomized controlled trials were selected for inclusion in pairwise meta-analyses and network meta-analysis investigating the use of local infiltration analgesia (LIA), peripheral nerve blocks (PNB), and placebo in postoperative analgesia following total hip arthroplasty. No direct comparisons of LIA versus PNB were identified using the search criteria. Pairwise meta-analysis of LIA versus placebo demonstrated significantly lower pain scores and opioid consumption over the first 24 postoperative hours. Pairwise meta-analysis of PNB versus placebo demonstrated non-significant differences in pain scores and opioid consumption. Network meta-analysis (indirect comparison) suggested non-significant differences between LIA and PNB for pain scores and opioid consumption, although, modeling suggested a higher probability of LIA of being most effective of the studied interventions.
