Combining a digital health application with standard care significantly enhances rehabilitation outcomes for ACL surgery patients.

Eighty patients with ACL rupture, with or without meniscal injury, were randomized to receive either app-assisted therapy plus standard care (n=42) or standard care alone (n=38). The primary outcome of interest was the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS). Secondary outcomes included subjective pain (NRS), subjective function (NRS), range of motion, and leg circumference. Outcomes were assessed presurgery (t1, t2) and postsurgery (t3 to t6), with the final evaluation at 14 weeks after surgery (t6). Overall, the results of the study revealed that patients using the Orthopy app in addition to standard care experienced significantly greater improvements in KOOS Pain and Symptoms subscales, and reported lower pain scores on the NRS compared to those receiving standard care alone. The findings suggest that a digital health app can effectively enhance prehabilitation and early postoperative rehabilitation following ACL surgery.
