Effect of different anesthetic modalities on postoperative delirium in elderly hip fractures: A meta-analysis.

This meta-analysis included nine randomized controlled trials with a total of 3,210 elderly patients who underwent hip fracture surgery. It compared the effects of general anesthesia (GA) versus spinal anesthesia (SA) on postoperative delirium (POD) and other postoperative complications. Pooled outcomes included the incidence of POD, intraoperative blood transfusion, pulmonary embolism, pneumonia, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and urinary retention. The analysis found no significant difference in POD incidence or in any of the other complications between GA and SA. The findings suggest that neither GA nor SA offers a distinct advantage in preventing POD or other postoperative complications in elderly hip fracture patients.
