OSTEOARTHRITIS
Diacerein effective, safe and has carry-over effect in treating knee osteoarthritis pain .

The efficacy, safety and carry-over effect of diacerein in the treatment of painful knee osteoarthritis: a randomised, double-blind, NSAID-controlled study.

Osteoarthritis Cartilage. 2007 Jun;15(6):605-14. Epub 2007 Apr 19

171 patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA) were randomized to receive one of two treatments for the primary outcome of pain. The intervention group received diacerein, while the control group received piroxicam (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug). Patients were also allowed to take paracetamol up to 6 times daily as a rescue analgesic. Results showed that diacerin was just as effective as piroxicam in reducing pain and improving function, but diacerein demonstrated a carry-over effect and was associated with a better safety profile.
