Comparing the effects of curvilinear position and micromovement on prevention of intraoperative acquired pressure injuries among patients undergoing surgery in the supine position: A randomized controlled trial.

One hundred and twenty patients undergoing open general surgery in the supine position were randomized to curvilinear positioning (n=40), micromovement (n=40), or standard supine care (n=40). The primary outcome was Intraoperative acquired pressure injury (IAPI) incidence; secondary outcomes included IAPI stage and location. Outcomes were assessed immediately post-op and on postoperative day 1. Overall, the results showed significantly fewer IAPIs with micromovement or curvilinear positioning versus control, with most injuries at the sacrum; stage and location distributions did not differ between groups. These findings suggest that simple table-based positioning strategies can lower IAPI risk during prolonged supine surgeries.
