A Randomized Prospective Evaluation of Outcomes after Total Hip Arthroplasty Using Cross-linked Marathon and Non–cross-linked Enduron Polyethylene Liners
J Arthroplasty. 2006 Sep; 21(6 Suppl 2):17-25.220 patients requiring total hip arthroplasty were randomized to receive a total hip arthroplasty with a non-cross-linked Enduron liner or a total hip arthroplasty with a cross-linked Marathon polyethylene liner. Two-dimensional head penetration and corresponding volumetric head displacement (Hip Analysis Suit), implant stability, osteolysis (radiographic review), and patient-perceived functional outcome data (questionnaire) were measured throughout the course of the study. At a mean follow-up of 5.7 years it was found that there was no significant difference in patient-perceived functional outcomes, but the Marathon group had a significant reduction in mean wear rate and incidence of osteolysis.
