The effects of corticosteroid injection versus local anesthetic injection in the treatment of lateral epicondylitis: a randomized single-blinded clinical trial

OE Journal. 2013;1(6):80 Arch Orthop Trauma Surg. 2013 Jun;133(6):757-63. doi: 10.1007/s00402-013-1721-x. Epub 2013 Mar 15114 patients were randomized to compare the clinical outcomes of corticosteroid injection (CSI) versus local anesthetic injection (LAI) for lateral epicondylitis. The CSI group received methylprednisolone 1 ml while the LAI group received procaine 1 ml 2% in a single dose. After 12 weeks of assessment, results revealed that the short-term (3 weeks) recovery was higher with the corticosteroid injection in comparison to the local anesthetic injection; however, the recurrence rate was the highest with the CSI group.
