Early outcome measurement of the effectiveness of conventional physical therapy versus continuous passive motion in knee function following retrograde femoral nailing-a prospective randomized controlled trial.

88 patients undergoing retrograde femoral nailing for femoral shaft fractures were randomized to either continuous passive motion (CPM; n=44) or physical therapy (PT; n=44). Outcomes of interest included the incidence of stiffness, total arc of motion, and pain on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Knee stiffness, total arc of motion, and VAS pain were all significantly better in the CPM group compared to the PT group at all time points.
