Continuous lumbar plexus block for postoperative pain control after total hip arthroplasty. A randomized controlled trial
J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2009 Jan;91(1):29-37225 patients scheduled for total hip arthroplasty (THA) were randomized into three groups to assess the effectiveness of three treatments for post-operative analgesia. Two groups received either femoral or lumbar plexus blockade in combination with patient controlled analgesia, while the control group received only patient controlled analgesia. 48 hours follow-up indicated that lumbar plexus block provided the best post-operative analgesia, having the lowest Visual Analog Scale (VAS) pain scores and opioid consumption.
