99 patients undergoing primary unilateral total knee arthroplasty were randomized to evaluate the efficacy of varied volumes and concentrations of a fixed dose of femoral nerve block (FNB). Patients were administered either a high-concentration, low-concentration, or single injection FNB, and were evaluated based on time to discharge readiness and opioid consumption over 12 months. This trial was terminated prematurely (61% of required enrolled patients), and the evidence presented revealed no significant difference between groups in discharge readiness. Morphine consumption was significantly lower in the low-concentration group. Functional outcomes were comparable between groups.
