The Role of Lateral Retinacular Release in Preventing Patellofemoral Malalignment in Double-Bundle Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Randomized Controlled Trial

One hundred and thirty-five patients with unilateral anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures were randomized to receive a single-bundle ACL reconstruction (n=45), a double-bundle ACL reconstruction (n=45), or a double-bundle ACL reconstruction with concomitant lateral retinaculum release (n=45). The outcomes of interest included knee function measured with the Kujala scale, and tibial tubercle-trochlear groove (TTTG), an indicator of patellofemoral instability. Outcomes were assessed between 6-18 months post-surgery. Results revealed superior scores in the concomitant release group vs. the single- and double-bundle groups for both Kujala scores and TTTG distance.
