Bioabsorbable Versus Titanium Screws in Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction Using Hamstring Autograft: A Prospective, Blinded, Randomized Controlled Trial With 5-Year Follow-up
Am J Sports Med. 2015 Aug;43(8):1893-901.40 patients with ACL tear undergoing surgical reconstruction were randomized to either receive bioabsorbable (poly-L-lactic acid with hydroxyapatite) or metallic interference screws for femoral and tibial fixation. The purpose of the study was to compare tunnel volume between the two groups after 2 and 5 years. Secondary outcomes included periscrew ossification, screw resorption, cyst formation and clinical outcomes. The results indicated no significant difference between groups in terms of tunnel volume at 5 years. Also, there was no significant difference noted in the clinical outcomes at 5 years.
