Comparison of the metabolism of 3,4-dimethoxyphenylethylamine and mescaline in humans
Biochem Pharmacol. 1966 23-Feb;():. 10.1016/0006-2952(66)90298-xEight patients were included in this crossover, randomized-controlled study comparing the metabolism of 3,4-dimethoxyphenylethylamine (DMPEA) and mescaline, also known as trimethoxyphenylethylamine (TMPEA). All patients received DMPEA, TMPEA and placebo treatments across three sessions that were conducted at weekly intervals. The main outcomes were drug effects, as measured through clinical observation and patient self-reports on the Clyde mood scale, DMPEA and TMPEA excretion, as well as the excretion of their metabolites 3,4-dimethoxyphenylacetic acid (DMPAA) and 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenylacetic acid (TMPAA), as analyzed through gas chromatography. Considerably more DMPEA and DMPAA were excreted (77.5%) compared to TMPEA and TMPAA (41.2%).
