A level-1 pilot study to evaluate of ultraporous beta-tricalcium phosphate as a graft extender in the posterior correction of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis

Eur Spine J. 2009 Feb;18(2):170-9. Epub 2008 Dec 12

40 patients with idiopathic scoliosis underwent surgical correction and were randomized to receive differing supplemental bone graft materials. The treatment group received beta-tricalcium phosphate, a synthetic cancellous bone, as a supplemental graft material. The control group received the standard treatment of an iliac crest bone graft. There were no differences in fusion rates or the degree of correction between the two groups. The ICBG had a significantly greater overall pain score at discharge from the hospital.
