Comparison of pregabalin & opioids for chronic low back pain in elderly patients .
Pharmacological management of chronic low back pain in older patients: a randomized controlled trial of the effect of pregabalin and opioid administration
Eur Spine J. 2015 Jun;24(6):1309-1765 elderly patients with chronic low back pain were randomly treated with either pregabalin or tramadol/acetaminophen for 4 weeks. The purpose was to compare the efficacy of these treatments on neuropathic pain. Results indicated similar rate of effectiveness in each cohort. Pregabalin displayed a significant effect on pain scores regardless whether patients presented with neuropathic pain or not, as well as a higher rate of effectiveness in patients who presented lower limb symptoms. Tramadol/acetaminophen was observed to have a significant effect on pain scores in patients without neuropathic pain, as well as a higher rate of effectiveness in those without lower limb symptoms.
