Effect of high-intensity laser therapy versus shockwave therapy on selected outcome measures in osteoporotic long-term hemiparetic patients: a randomized control trial.

120- predominantly male hemiparetic patients with osteoporosis between the age of 60-and-70- years were randomly allotted to undergo treatment with just medication and traditional physiotherapy (Control)(n=40), additional high intensity laser therapy (HILT)(n=40) or extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT)(n=40) for 12- weeks. The outcomes of interest included discomfort of patients evaluated by using a visual analog scale(VAS), fall risk assessment which was assessed using Overall stability index (OSS) and Short Form of Berg Balance Scale (SFBBS) and finally the quality of life which was assessed using the Quality of Life Questionnaire of the European Foundation for Osteoporosis (QUALEFFO-41). All outcomes were measured at baseline and after 12 weeks of therapy. The results of the study showed that both the HILT and ESWT group showed statistically significant improvement in all the outcomes whereas the control group showed significant improvements in only the SFBBS scores. Also, the HILT group showed significantly greater improvement than even the ESWT group in all other measures except VAS scores.
