Implant design influences patient outcome after total knee arthroplasty: a prospective double-blind randomised controlled trial

212 patients scheduled for total knee arthroplasty were randomized to receive either a Triathlon implant or Kinemax implant. The purpose of this study was to compare clinical results of the newer-generation device (Triathlon) versus the older-generation knee system (Kinemax). Oxford Knee Score, pain, range of motion, lower limb power symmetry, and patient satisfaction were assessed over 3 years postoperatively. Results demonstrated slightly, but borderline significantly greater improvement in OKS from baseline to 1 year in the Triathlon versus Kinemax group. The Triathlon was also noted to have significantly greater improvement in flexion, greater recovery of operative limb power, and reduced maximum pain experienced. Patient satisfaction was also higher with the Triathlon knee system.
