Comparison of Tendon Lengthening With Traditional Versus Accelerated Rehabilitation After Achilles Tendon Repair: A Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial
OrthoEvidence Journal (OE Journal) - ACE Report
OE Journal. 2020;8(14):9 Am J Sports Med. 2020 Jun;48(7):1720-1726.What this means for my practice?
No significant differences were observed for patient reported outcomes or tendon lengthening at all time-points between the accelerated and standard rehabilitation after undergoing repair surgery for Achilles tendon rupture. However, further studies are needed to compare the differences including longer follow-up and a larger sample size.
Study Summary
Eighteen patients were randomized into the accelerated or the standard rehabilitation programs. The primary outcome was tendon lengthening. Secondary outcomes included the Achilles Tendon Total Rupture Score (ATRS) and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Pain Interference Short Form (PROMIS PI-SF) score. Results revealed no significant differences in tendon lengthening or patient-reported outcomes (ATRS, PROMIS PI-SF) between the accelerated and standard rehabilitation programs at all time-points.
