Does Patellar Denervation with Electrocautery Benefits for Total Knee Arthroplasty without Patellar Resurfacing: A Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trails.

This meta-analysis included 12 studies with a total of 1,745 patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) without patellar resurfacing, comparing outcomes between those who received patellar denervation (PD) and those who did not (NPD). The primary outcomes analyzed were the incidence of anterior knee pain (AKP), visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain, range of motion (ROM), American Knee Society Score (KSS), Oxford Knee Score (OKS), and patellar score (PS), along with secondary outcomes of complications and reoperations. Results indicated that PD significantly reduced AKP incidence compared to NPD, with improvements in KSS, OKS, and PS scores, though differences were below clinically meaningful thresholds. No significant differences were observed for VAS and ROM between groups.
