Removal of Forearm Plate Leads to a Higher Risk of Refracture-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Orthop Surg. 2024 Dec 11;17(1):36–44.Twenty-three studies including 2402 patients with forearm shaft fractures were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing plate removal versus plate retention after fracture union. Pooled outcomes of interest included overall refracture rate, subgroup refracture rates by symptoms and plate type, and complications. Patients who underwent plate removal had a significantly higher refracture risk. Subgroup analyses revealed elevated refracture risk particularly among asymptomatic patients and across both DCP and LCP plate types. These findings suggest that plate retention after union may reduce the risk of refracture, especially in asymptomatic patients.
