Evaluation of Proximal Femoral Bone Mineral Density in Cementless Total Hip Arthroplasty: A 3-Arm Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial.
J Bone Joint Surg Am . 2024 Mar 20;106(6):508-516.One hundred and nineteen patients with hip osteoarthritis were randomized to receive either a proximally coated collarless dual-taper wedge stem (n=38), a proximally coated collarless anatomic stem (n=36), or a fully coated collarless triple-taper stem (n=38). The primary outcome of interest was the change in proximal femoral BMD, assessed at multiple intervals up to two years postoperatively. Secondary outcomes included patient-reported pain, function, and health-related quality of life. Overall, results showed significant BMD preservation in the lateral cortex (Gruen zone 2) for the dual-taper wedge and anatomic stems (p=0.019) and an increase in BMD across most proximal zones.
