Early Clinical and Radiographic Outcomes of Robot-Assisted Versus Conventional Manual Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Randomized Controlled Study

Seventy-two patients with end-stage knee osteoarthritis were randomized to undergo a robotic-assisted total knee arthroplasty (n=37) or a conventional manual total knee arthroplasty (n=35). Outcomes of interest included functional outcomes (Knee Society Score; WOMAC; range of motion), operative time and length of stay, the rate of lower limb vein thrombosis, and radiographic alignment and outlier rates, measured up to 90 days post-operation. The results found no difference in all functional outcomes between the two groups, with a longer operative time in the robotic group. However, alignment and the rate of outliers in the lateral tibial component was significantly better in the robotic group. No difference in the rate of thrombosis was observed.
