Short-term clinical and radiological results of two different design metaphyseal fitting femoral stems in total hip arthroplasty: a prospective, randomized trial

One hundred and one patients scheduled for a total hip arthroplasty were randomized to receive either a Tri-Lock Bone Preservation System short femoral stem (n=54) or a Minima S short femoral stem (n=47). The outcomes of interest included the Harris Hip Scores, the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) osteoarthritis index scores, Short-Form 36 (SF-36) quality of life scores, patient satisfaction, the incidence of complications, and radiological outcomes. Outcomes were assessed at 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, and 24 months post-operation. Results revealed no statistically significant differences between the two implant designs in all patient-reported outcomes, at all time-points (p>0.05 for all). The incidence of stress shielding and coronal stem alignment were higher in the Minima S group compared to the Tri-Lock group.
