Effect of a self-determination theory-based communication skills training program on physiotherapists' psychological support for their patients with chronic low back pain: a randomized controlled trial

24 physiotherapists and 24 patients with chronic low back pain from 4 hospital clinics were randomized into 2 groups. Physiotherapists in the intervention group received 8 hours of communication skills training to analyze the effects of this intervention on needs-supportive behavior during clinical practice. Results indicated that communication training resulted in greater needs-supportive behavior in physiotherapists who received training compared to physiotherapist who underwent a standard 1-hour education session.
