A Comparative Evaluation of Combined Nerve Block Versus Periarticular Infiltration on Postoperative Pain Relief in Total Hip Arthroplasty.
Indian J Orthop . 2023 Jun 19;57(8):1251-1266.Thirty patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) were randomized to receive either a combined nerve block (CNB; n=15) or periarticular infiltration analgesia (PIA; n=15). Outcomes of interest included pain on a visual analog scale (VAS) at 6-hour intervals to 48 hours, time to rescue analgesia, number of rescue analgesia doses, time to complete sensory and motor recovery, and complications. Pain scores were significantly better in the combined nerve block group at all time points compared to the PIA group. Time to complete sensory and motor recovery, time to first rescue analgesia, and number of doses favored the CNB group.
