Prospective randomized evaluation of a collagen/thrombin and autologous platelet hemostatic agent during total knee arthroplasty

100 patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty were randomised to receive either standard haemostasis and Vitagel, a haemostatic treatment, or a control group receiving standard haemostasis alone to examine the effects on blood transfusions. No patients in the Vitagel group required blood transfusions compared with 10% of the patients in the control group. Patients in the Vitagel group also had significantly better haemoglobin scores on the 4th postoperative day.
