Survival of polished compared with precoated roughened cemented femoral components. A prospective, randomized study

201 patients,>50 yr (219 hips), scheduled to be treated with a total hip arthroplasty (THA) were randomized to have either a polished (Ra 0.18 to 0.3 mm) or a precoated roughened (Ra 1.8 to 2.3 mm) cemented femoral component, both with similar geometry. Clinical and radiographic outcome were assessed for up to a minimum of 5 years postoperatively. No significant differences in the clinical outcomes were observed between two types of surface finishes of cemented femoral components at a minimum of five years, provided that good cement technique was used.
