2021 COA/CORS/CORA Annual Meeting: A Systematic Review of Clinical Outcomes for Outpatient vs Inpatient Shoulder Arthroplasty

Seventeen studies (11 were used in quantitative analysis) were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing inpatient (n=6,018) and outpatient (n=92,962) shoulder arthroplasty. Outcomes of interest included the odds of re-admission, post-operative complications, surgical complications and medical complications, as well as cost savings. Results of this meta-analysis revealed a significantly lower likelihood of any post-operative complication in the outpatient group compared to the inpatient group (p=0.02). However, no significant differences in the pooled likelihood of medical or surgical complications were observed between the two groups (p>0.05 for both). Cost savings ranged from $3,614 and $53,202 (19.7-69.9%) in the outpatient group compared to the inpatient group. No significant difference in the likelihood of readmission was observed between the two groups (p=0.49).
