COA2017: IA TXA reduces blood loss, not transfusion rate, in THA and TKA .
Low dose intra-articular tranexamic acid reduces hemoglobin drop and D-dimer formation after total hip and knee replacements: doubled-blinded RCT
127 patients scheduled for either total hip arthroplasty or total knee arthroplasty were randomized to be administered either 0.5g intraarticular tranexamic acid or saline at the end of the procedure. Patients were assessed for haemoglobin drop, calculated total blood loss, transfusion rate, troponin levels, and d-dimer levels postoperatively. While Hb drop did not significantly differ between groups, calculated total blood loss was significantly lower in the IA TXA group compared to the placebo group on postoperative day 1. No patient in either group required transfusion.
