COA: Improved student performance with novice-video versus expert-video instruction .
Observational learning in orthopaedic surgical simulation
74 medical students performed a simulated basic diagnostic knee arthroscopy and then were randomized to receive one of the following interventions: a novice-video intervention, an expert-video intervention or no intervention at all. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of these interventions on students' performance post-intervention and following a retention period. Results, assessed directly by the simulator, indicated that students in all 3 groups improved from pre-test to post-test, however the students in the novice-video group had the best overall performance.
