Is Topical Vancomycin an Option? A Randomized Controlled Trial to Determine the Safety of Topical Use of Vancomycin Powder in Preventing Post-Operative Infections in Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA)

165 patients scheduled for total knee arthroplasty and administered preoperative intravenous antibiotic prophylaxis were randomized to either intraoperative topical vancomycin administration or twp postoperative intravenous antibiotic doses. The primary outcome of this study was incidence of surgical site infection. Results demonstrated a significantly higher incidence of surgical site infection in the topical vancomycin group compared to two postoperative intravenous antibiotic doses.
