2019 COA/ICORS Annual Meeting: Effect of Femoral Nerve Block on Hip Fractures Patients

73 patients scheduled for hip surgery were randomized to receive a pre-operative femoral nerve block in addition to usual care, or usual care only, for the relief of pain. Outcomes of interest included pain at rest and during activity, pre- and post-operative opioid consumption, and mobilization on post-operative day 1. Results from the study revealed significantly favourable pain scores at rest and during activity in the femoral nerve block group compared to the control group. No differences in pre- and post-operative opioid consumption, or mobilization on post-operative day 1, observed between the femoral nerve block and control groups.
